Top 10 Michael Kors Watches – . Boo, hiss and sneer – get it all out of your system, my fellow snobs. There are certain congruent threads of thought that exist in watchfam that sometimes only take a watch meme or a snarky Reddit comment for new watch collectors (or the horologically curious) to immediately embrace. For better or worse, it happens – “It doesn’t get more classic than a black dial, dateless Rolex sub;” “Every man needs at least

These are concepts that people take without having practical empirical experience for their opinion. In the case of fashion watches such as Fossil, Daniel Wellington and Michael Kors watches, the immediate knee-jerk reaction to watches is to hate them.

No – although the fashion house itself can often be classified as a “luxury brand”, the watches themselves do not fall under the label of “luxury watch” by the standards of the wider watch community.

No – you can often get away with getting caught in the rain with one on, but under no circumstances should you swim or submerge the watch. Of course, there are stories of people claiming to swim with theirs and that’s fine, but I find these cases to be the exception to the reality that these are not waterproof watches.

But why? Most of those who claim that fashion watches are not good are probably basing this on second and even third hand phone calls. The dirty secret is that most watch geeks are more inclined to decide on a watch or brand they’ve never seen in person because they want to appeal to the majority of the Watchfam elite: “If I like everyone in the Watch community thinks Michael Kors watches aren’t good, then that’s what I think too.”

I’m guilty of it – I’ve made unfounded, uninformed claims and opinions about fashion watches without actually spending much time with them because I thought it was the right thing to do to pander to the crowd.

As I contemplated the reality that I probably had borderline horological personality disorder, I figured the quickest way to figure this out was to get a Michael Kors watch on my wrist for examination. The point of this writing is not to prove that Michael Kors and all fashion watches are actually phenomenal. The sole point of this review is to give you an unbiased, authentic overview of what the experience of wearing the Michael Kors Lexington Chronograph is like.

In case you’re not familiar, the term “fashion watch” is generally used by watchfam to classify a watch as having more of a tendency to look good than to be good. In this context, it is good in relation to the quality of the construction, the materials used and the mechanism in the watch.

Basically, the concept of derogatory use of “fashion watch” is rooted in the punishment of vanity: “you want to look better than you actually are” etc. There can also be a financial component to what makes a fashion watch in that the watch costs very little but tries to look more expensive than it actually is; however, this is usually a bit more ambiguous to define. With that, let’s start with the review.

Ok, this watch is big – much bigger than I expected when I first looked at the photos online. The reason I was initially put off is that this Michael Kors watch takes its design inspiration from the classic Rolex Datejust format – the jubilee bracelet with this raised bezel. I was expecting something in the 39mm to 40mm range. But a big hand is a feature of Micheal Kors watches so I expected that.

At 45mm in diameter and 53mm lug to lug, it’s pretty snug on my 6.75 inch wrist, but being a quartz chronograph the height is approx. 13mm. So that helps the watch at least not feel too heavy. But for someone who may not initially be inclined towards larger watches, I would think twice before purchasing the Lexington Chronograph.

Michael Kors lists the material as stainless steel, which I don’t necessarily doubt, but it’s very thin and almost flimsy. The watch has that characteristic hollowness that is usually associated with watches that are constructed with less attention to quality.

Another issue with the stainless steel case material is that it’s very cheaply coated to be “gun metal” and “rose gold” so it almost feels like plastic to the touch. On the wrist the watch is a little heavy for its size and although the proportions are too large for my wrist, it wears well if a larger watch is something you’re looking for.

All these negatives aside, the visual quality of the finish and especially the frame looks quite nice. Basically, as long as you don’t spend too long touching or thinking about the case material, it doesn’t look half bad. I’ve had uglier watches on my wrist. I’m starting to properly understand why a “fashion” watch is used in a negative way.

Oh wow – where do I start with the bracelet? If you have arm hair, don’t buy this watch unless you want all your arm hair pulled out. The watch on which the jubilee bracelet links are placed is perfectly spaced to trap the hair between them. Then when you move your hand or whatever, it just pulls out a little hair. Ouch.

Additionally, this is a pin bracelet (as opposed to a pin and collar bracelet or a screw bracelet). After sizing the bracelet, I noticed that the pins would start to slip out of the links after wearing the watch for a short time. I assumed it was my user error and double checked that I had correctly inserted the pins in the links – I had. So something about the manufacturing tolerances of the bracelet links meant that when I removed some of the pins to size the bracelet, they (the pins) would never fit properly again. You can see it sticking out in the photo below.

The overall quality of the material of the bracelet itself suffers from the same downfalls as the case. It feels like plastic because of the molding they use. But, like the case, the bracelet visually looks very nice.

The dial looks very good – it shines in all the right places and even has a radial brush on the “gun metal” part. The chronograph sub-dials, sub-dial hands, hands, markers and date window are coated in “rose gold”, creating a beautiful sense of elegant balance on the dial. The hands and markers are illuminated, but the lume is a joke – I could almost do without it.

Also yes, it wasn’t a typo before, this is actually a chronograph movement. It’s not one of those dial layouts that features day, date, and a 24-hour subdial that looks like a chronograph. The first button at 2 o’clock activates the chronograph, which then activates the subdial at 6 to run the chronograph seconds, and the subdial at 9 as the elapsed minute counter (up to 60 minutes). Pressing button 2 again pauses the chrono, then button a 4 resets everything. The dial at 3 is the 24-hour dial.

The movement in this Michael Kors Lexington Chronograph is a Miyota JS25 (+/- 20 seconds per month). Michael Kors doesn’t state this anywhere on their website (because they probably think no one cares), but after opening the watch myself (not recommended unless you’re comfortable opening watches) I could see the Miyota JS25 movement.

I’m a little upset about this. This is clearly not the watch for me. The design, vibe and overall look of the Datejust platform just doesn’t match what I usually look for in a watch. However, for someone who really likes this style (a bold presence with a good mix of modern and classic aesthetics), I can see this Michael Kors watch being the perfect fit.

But it’s also worth noting that quality was definitely an issue here. Between the bracelet pins, the overall feel of the watch, and the damn links pulling the hair out on my arm, is this a watch I would recommend to people? Honestly, I wouldn’t buy it online – try it on in store and decide for yourself. Some of the problems I have with this watch may not even register with other users.

I will say this though, if you’re looking for a watch that will at least look good on your wrist, and not necessarily the best quality or build, then this could be a good fit for you. The experience of wearing this watch for a while has certainly helped me better form my opinion on fashion watches: I don’t necessarily like them, but that doesn’t mean I should stop other people from enjoying them.
