Social Media Content Marketing Plan – Just like most spicy foods don’t taste right without salt, your social media platforms are always without a strategy. If you don’t know the basics: your goals, target audience and their preferences, it will be difficult to achieve results on social media.
Whether you want to grow your brand or advance as a marketer, creating a marketing strategy is essential.
Social Media Content Marketing Plan
You can think of it this way: A strategy is where you’re going. A plan is how you will get there.
Step Social Media Marketing Strategy For Businesses In 2023
One of the simplest ways to build your social media marketing strategy is to ask yourself the 5Ws:
To help you create your strategy, I’ve created a simple social media marketing strategy template. (After making a copy of it) use, modify or replace as you need.
Another interesting thing about strategy (or strategies): You can have a strategy for each of your social media channels, such as a Facebook marketing strategy, an Instagram marketing strategy, and so on, all of which lead to your overall social media strategy. Marketing strategy.
Are you on social media to promote your products? Increase traffic to your website? Or serve your customers?
Social Media Marketing: A Simple Roadmap
In general, unless you have a group where different people or groups in the group can take on different goals, it is better to focus on only a few goals.
For example, at , the marketing team uses social media to increase our brand awareness and drive traffic to our content, while our advocacy team uses social media to provide timely customer support.
Understanding your target audience will help you easily answer the following questions of what, where and when you will share.
For example, if a travel and lifestyle brand (like Outdoors) knows that its target audience likes to read about new destinations and travel tips, it can share such content on its social media profiles.
Social Media Marketing For Businesses
There are many different ways to create marketing personas. My favorite approach, again, is to use the 5Ws and 1H.
You don’t have to start from scratch. If your business has been operating for a while, you probably already have a good sense of your target audience. If helpful, write it down so you can share it with the group or use it for your future reference.
Looking at this question can help you think about the types of content to share. For example, do you want to share videos or pictures?
We’re talking about your social media marketing strategy here, so let’s take a step back and think at a higher level. Instead of categories of content to share, “theme” might be a better term.
Creating A Social Media Marketing Plan
If you scroll through the social media profiles mentioned above, you may have noticed that brands have more than one main theme. Having a few themes is great because it gives you room to share different content to keep your audience engaged without being distracted.
A good understanding of your target audience is helpful. Look at your marketing people and consider the following questions:
For a fitness apparel and accessories brand (like Gymshark), the goal of its target audience is to keep up-to-date with the latest fitness gear. If so, it can share its latest products on its social media profiles.
Will it be too much of an ad? Probably not. Investment bank Piper Jaffray surveyed more than 8,600 American teenagers and found that 70 percent prefer to be contacted about new products via Instagram. Understanding your target audience is key.
Integrated Marketing Plan
The next step is to decide where you will share your content. In other words, which social media platforms does your brand want to be on?
Before we go any further, remember that your brand doesn’t have to be on every social media platform. That being said, it’s smart to have at least one complete profile on the Big Four – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn – because they’ll often show up on the first page of Google search results when people search for your brand. .
Understanding your target audience is useful when deciding what to share. On which platforms is your target audience most active? What makes them look at that platform? For example, teenagers and young adults like to scroll through TikTok when they are bored to see what their friends are doing or what products their favorite creator is using.
Another, albeit minor, point to consider is what is your brand’s “X factor”? Are you good at photography, videos or writing? Certain platforms lend themselves well to certain content types. For example, photos are best on Instagram, long-form videos on YouTube, and short-form on TikTok. But this is a minor point, because social media platforms nowadays are evolving to provide almost all types of content.

Finally, consider smaller, niche sites as well. For example, multiplayer online cycling training software company Zwift has launched a club on Strava, a social network for athletes. Their club has more than 57,000 cyclists, and thousands more are engaged with their posts on Strava.
The last important part of your strategy is figuring out when you want to share your content. You may be tempted to research the best time(s) to post.
Let’s take a step back and look at this again from a higher level. Before deciding what time of day and day of the week you want to post, consider the behaviors of your target audience.
From these few examples, you can probably guess that there is no universal best time to post – it depends on your audience. So for this step, focus on the common behavior patterns of your target audience.
How To Measure The Roi Of Your Social Media Content Marketing Strategy
Once you’ve developed your social media marketing strategy, experiment to find your brand’s best times to post.
But that is not the end. As mentioned above, where you go is a strategy; A plan is how you will get there. You have decided where you want to go; Now you need a plan.
How should you populate your social media profiles? What should your tone and voice be? What type of post should you use (ie image, link, video, etc.)?
We have a step-by-step guide to creating a social media marketing plan to help you take the next step and your social media success. Here’s an overview of the information you’ll find in that guide:
